Most
PCs come configured with a mouse, an internal modem, and
two external COM ports. If the mouse is a serial mouse,
it is usually attached to, and configured for, COM1, and
the internal modem is usually configured for COM2.
If
you have used another serial device on the port
to which eBeam will be attached, it may be possible
that the resources for that COM port were not "released"
by the other device when you disconnected it.
You will need to do some investigating about that
device:
- If
you uninstall the device's software (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs),
can the PC communicate with the eBeam hardware?
- Does
the device load at Windows
StartUp? If so, if you remove it from the StartUp
group, can the PC communicate with the
eBeam hardware?
(To remove a program from StartUp - right click
on the Start menu. Select Open >
Programs folder > StartUp folder.
Delete or drag the program icon from the StartUp
folder).
- Can
the device be
reconfigured to release the COM port once the
software application is closed down?
If after trying these options you
still can't communicate with the
eBeam hardware,
